Patricia Hruby Powell loves to visit young and not-young readers in schools, libraries, or conferences, and inspire them to read and express themselves in the arts. Formerly a dancer who spoke in her dances, touring world-wide, then a storyteller who danced in her stories. She has visited hundreds of schools in the U.S. as a dancer, storyteller, and author, to great acclaim. She was a librarian and is the author of Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker which earned five starred reviews, won a Robert F. Sibert Nonfiction Honor, a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Honor, and Parent's Choice Gold for Poetry, among other awards. She is the author of the young adult Loving vs. Virginia which was an Indie Next Pick; Struttin’ With Some Barbecue, a Kirkus Reviews Best Book; and Lift As You Climb, a Mighty Girl’s 2020 Book of the Year. All four books are Junior Library Guild Selections, and have earned additional awards. She has forthcoming books about Martha Graham, Women’s Suffrage, and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as for the very young: Duck Duck Goose. She teaches writing to young readers and at the college level.
